How about a Broomstick subcategory?

HI HI HI Away3Ders, Choons here. Site is looking great. My first suggestion is to have an all Broomstick subcategory since it works so differently than previous releases. Filtering through the Google group for 4.0 specific stuff is kinda arduous. Probably something you intend to do anyway, but thought I’d chime in. A real categorized forum like this will definitely streamline hunting for info.

Agree.I think there should be at leat two sub categories .One for Away3D 3.x and second Molehill. Also another one can be dedicated for cross platform issues like integration with different libs…

We don’t want a bunch of sub-categories, which is why we have created a filter for you to use if you want to separate between threads that relate to different versions of the framework. When you post a new subject, select what version your question/feedback relates to (e.g. Away3D 4.0) in the list under the message field. Readers can then filter the forum using the filters in the top right to only show posts related to a particular piece of software.

First of all - great job with the website. A forum, at last grin

I don’t know if the filters are really helpful. IMHO subcategories would be the far better choice.

Currently I’m working on a project using the Broomstick version. I’m not interested in Away 3.x bugs, enhancements at all. On the contrary the 3.x faction is not interested in broomstick posts when trying to solve a issue on their projects.

On some (most?) forums you can click on the parent category and get all posts from all subcategories.

Wouldn’t that be more elegant?

Hey Sazz,

You might be right, but we think the filtering option is promising. Why don’t we give it a try. If you only want to see Broomstick stuff, then you turn off the filters for anything other than Broomstick. You will instantly be shown things relevant to broomstick and wont have to bother about browsing through a lot of duplicate categories around the forum.

I agree, not to many sub-categories please!

Also why not assume forums are for latest, and then ‘old’ forum for non-broomstick

Could be. In my opinion we should migrate all communications to the forum. The Google list will remain for now, and some think that it should be maintained indefinitely. Personally, I would prefer to see it become deprecated in the next few months. Its up to the community really.

Of course you are the boss so I can’t tell you what to do but take a look At Flare3d and Alternativa forums. We don’t ask an infinitive multitude of the sub categories but only those to separate between old 3x and new molehill stuff. Filtering is handy but not always good enough in terms Of topics ordering.
Cheers

Really? I thought the whole point of having a forum like this actually IS the ability to subcategorize. Otherwise we just have a prettied up clone of the Google group. We’re not talking a thousand subcategories, just the ones that make sense

Hi guys,
The idea about the filter is exactly to facilitate what Sazz Somewhere asks for - to only see the post that are about Broomstick. To do that, uncheck everything except Away3D 4.x and that’s all you’ll see on the topic screen. I think this is a perfect solution. It’s still all in one Forum so it’s easy to moderate and it’s dead easy to filter.

This is only the first take on filtering. Give us feedback and we’ll improve it?

J
