You can simply create a sphere with a spheric UV texture that moves with the camera to acheive this right?

Hi Guys
Does anyone have a tutorial for this ‘skyDome’ effect as would love to try it out. Have found quite a few things, but the examples do not work due to code updating, methinks which outdate the tutorials.
Am grateful for any help offered.
Best to all
F

Yeah I’m not super fond of sky boxes as they deform images.

A sky dome sounds way better. Take a look at the SkyBox class to understand how it works. Then maybe all it takes is a properly made texture to fit an hemisphere ? I’m not sure you need any distortion or fancy stuff like in sky boxes if you have the right texture.

And with just a normal flat image it will still look smooth so long as the upper row of the image is of one single color, I think…

It would still be a nice addition to the framework.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. Am trying to understand the skyDome and have what is a ‘working example’ for away3d 4 but can’t get it to work for many code change reasons.will add it here and perhaps some kind person will show the parts needing to be changed.
Best, Frederick.

Ewww, sorry can’t help here. I can’t start messing with Away3D 2.5 while learning v4.

From Away3D 4, it’s more complicated than what I thought. We’d need to mirror SkyBox, SkyBoxMaterial, SkyBoxPass, SkyBoxNode and compensate for the fact that Context3D has a createCubeTexture method but nothing about domes—we’d need to make one ourselves.

Then sky boxes seem to benefit from tight integration all over the place in the Away3D framework.

So it’s something that seems best to be developed by Away team… If you guys read this, what do you think about SkyDomes ?

I second this.
Skydome is not a simple entity, it’s special in:
- moving along with camera(just as skybox sitting on frustrum)
- uv texture animation
- a perlin noise interface to generate texture, better be gpu accelerated
- better supporting multilayer
- better supporting time of day

BTW: skydome is not hemi-sphere, is a sphere

I did not realize it was a 2.5v example… Am learning v4 myself after 3.6 its whole new way of thinking…at least for my mind. If anyone can help wth this would be super, OR find a way to have objects at ground level of a skybox.
