does anyone know if it is possible to have a material be transparent, but still receive shadows?  the reason i need this, i want to cast a shadow of my avatar on a plane at his feet that follows his walking.  that way, the cpu is only having to deal with that small render area since rendering shadows across many other msterials and objects runs tooo slow on mobile.

thanks in advance,

andy

this is a maybe a really weird solution and i don’t know about the performance implications, but you could try rendering a shadow volume in a slightly darker transparent material by utilizing the depth and stencil buffers and stage3dproxy. you’d have to work out the precise ordering of everything but i believe it’s doable. otherwise just use a little fake circular shadow rendered with stage3dproxy for transparency sorting, if all you’re really concerned about is grounding your character and you are willing to sacrifice proper shadowing.
