Attachments on skeletal animations

What is the recommended way of attaching items, lets say a sword, onto a skeletal animation of a model?  Exported via awd2 and tried to something simple, like make the sword a child of the ObjectContainer3D of the wrist, but it does not update when the animation is playing.

Any thoughts?  Thank you!
