CORRECT_Z_ORDER and PhongColorMaterial funkiness

Has anyone experienced weird behaviors with PhongColorMaterial when using the CORRECT_Z_ORDER renderer? Looks like the triangles created by triangle splitting process of the renderer is calculating the shades individually instead of as a whole. This results in the odd render in the screenshot attached. The surface is only being broken down into smaller triangles when the camera is viewing it from certain angles. When the surface is not broken down, the render looks correct.
