Starling Sprite as Away3D Material

Has anyone had success using a starling sprite as an Away3D material and, if so, what might be the most efficient way to go about it? Would it require rendering the sprite as a bitmap and using it as a bitmap material, what kind of performance issues might that cause, and is there a better way? Just starting with starling and looking for any pointers those with more experience might have.

Thanks!
