kinect help?

I am using AIRKinect 2.0 which uses Away 3D skeleton + joint classes and requires a .md5 model for a 3d, rigged example. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Is it necessary to use only a .md5 for a rigged model? can’t a collada export the armature + bones? doesn’t the kinect handle the mesh animation, not any animation from the model/isn’t the kinect only needing the mesh + skeleton info??...thanks for any input.
