VERTEX ANIMATION

I’m looking everywhere something about making some cool animation like in c4d and trying to convert them in md2, but, well, I still don’t have a clue.

The basic idea: I have a simple plane (for example) I deform it in c4d like twisting or other funny movement, than I just want to loop it.

I’d like to make interesting abstract animations, and see them in action.

I’ve tried to use the vertex animator class but with no success. It would be cool just to have my plane exported from c4d (obj) in 2 steps: not twisted and twisted, and I thought it would be easy to just interpolate them in away3d with that class.

Well, if you have any clue on this subject, it would be a dreampost (I also think some other people want to know how to achieve this result. Bone animation is ok but vertex animation is so much fun when you want to just make some “art” stuff).

Thanks in advance (:

Here’s a couple of my early experiments that should show you the basics…’

After that I resorted to more extreme measures to get my animations over from 3D Studio to Away3D

For artistic stuff, doing it realtime in AS3 is clearly the way to go.
You just need to take the vertices, re-position them via some algorithm or another, and re-assign them. Even though there may be 1000’s of vertices, AS3 seems to handle this no problem.

Good Luck!

So you suggest me to do transformation just with as3, mostly because of gpu processing matter?

I like really much your examples, and I’ve seen them before, but it’s really hard to program them. I could make some sine wave distortion, but to me it lacks the opportunity to just be more creative in cinema4d (or 3ds) and then just show them online. Yes, I know it’s not “realtime”, but you have more control on the creative process. Just thinking about not just abstract shapes, but also interesting animations, morphing effects etc..that would be a nightmare with just as3 programming.

As you can se I’m a noob, and it would be WAY more appealing (and easy) just to workflow from c4d or at least to morph via actionscript 3-4 main frames.

Anyway thanks for your reply, I’ll first try checking your methods; anyway, if you have any clue about my “easyer” way, I’d love to hear some tips from you.

Thanks!

You should keep your eye on Minko’s Shader Lab.
It offers a visual way to work with materials, scripted animation and music (judging by the demos)

I see your dilemma, for me AS3 is easier than modelling smile

I checked minko last time, and I was thinking about moving there. Problem is I’ve already done some progress with away..it would be something like beginning from scratch..plus there’s way less information than on away3d.

Anyway I’ll check it out, but the lab is not ready yet.

So to say, the vertex animator in away3d doesn’t work the way I’d like to be?

Or maybe do you know any good workflow to create md2, exporting from x with file extension y, etc?

Thanks so much for your time <3
