Well, I never got the example going but I found the solution for my problem. My own model (the one built with AwayBuilder) was assembled with the textures EMBEDDED. I simply removed the textures and went from a limit of 83 instances of my tree to the full 267 instances that I need and more. The limitation was caused by the many instances of the texture and not the model itself. Now I just need to apply the texture and I should be good to go.
