JSAway brings high performance 3D graphics to the web through JavaScript.

Inspired by fellow Away3D team member Stephen White, the idea was to bring the capability of the Away3D Flash 3D graphics API to the web and exposing it’s capability to JavaScript for rich interactive 3D web development. Okay, so it’s not strictly speaking using pure JavaScript as a 3D engine, however, at the moment, there is not a cross platform implementation currently available that provides such high quality and performant 3D graphics that can be rendered and manipulated directly and so easily through JavaScript.

JSAway acts as an interface between the Flash Away3D engine, encompassed in a single SWF file, and JavaScript where commands are executed to control the entire 3D environment, from creation to manipulation and interaction.

Technical Demos/Examples Check out the examples page for some quick introductions to the features and capabilities of JSAway.

What’s new…

This is the initial release V0.1 of JSAway which is based on the Away3D release 2.0.

Here is a quick run-down of the key features.

  • no ActionScript knowledge is required
  • simple command reference exposes huge range of features
  • all API basic primitives can be used
  • basic 3D event handling
  • filter based effects on objects
  • simple custom tweening operations
  • simple bitmap manipulation, get/set pixel and draw bitmap
  • getting/setting of object properties
  • material handling
  • content (materials and 3D models) loading – bitmaps, sketchup, dae…..
  • powerful features including lathe, extrudes, elevations, etc are supported
  • custom tweening of object properties
  • various automatic camera functions – object tracking, panning, etc
  • simple mouse navigation controls – rotation and twisting the scene based on mouse movement

* Although the implementation of some of the items listed is in place, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the functionality has been that thoroughly tested – if at all. The technical examples have served as practical development exercises but do not cover all aspects of the API. As more examples come along, more coverage will be gained. This is also where you can contribute by letting me know what does/doesn’t work.

Enjoy.
