post Away3D Environement Normal Mapping

normal mapping

It’s been a while since my last post on materials. I thought it might be good to let see we are VERY busy right now with Away3D.
One of the latest feature, like this demo shows, is the normal mapping. Now natively implemented in the engine.

Any mesh using this new Material will reflect the environement or a given reflection map.
This is the first of this kind of materials and i have already a few more in the making.
How would you find being able to add phong shading coming from a given light source to your model?

Check this blog to see soon more of that shiny stuff!
Away3D rocks people!

k, Back to code now… too much fun!

Fabrice
PS: Rob is actually busy merging our codes for the next release.
PS2: Right click on model, open the Flashplayer menu, and select Away stats if you want some fps details…

Update
Made some tests last nite.
Code seams stabile and perform pretty well no matter model geometry being loaded…
Tried a 4206 faces overkill head model. FPS dropped down to 2fps and on init of the mesh the head.obj needed arround 2 seconds to intialize due to enormous amount of precalculations. The hummingbird model however with a respectable 974 faces count was running at a steady 25 fps very smootly.
I will try to improve the code on this…

  1. Isn’t it “environment”?

Also, where is the normal mapping? afaik, the normal mapping is this:

  2. Strictly said normal mapping is a another way to say bump mapping, so i give you that, it might have been beter to write normal mappED instead of mappING.
Since the code basically calculates uv mapping according to normals and do not influence the source.
However, the normal mapping ( bump ) coming soon shares a lot of this code, and will influence source instead of uv’s or do both. I let it that way! :)

I prefer concentrate on code rather than be picky on words. Even beter, i’ll post demos doing it and people will call them the way they want!

  5. Altho I have my manipulated photos on webshots and myspace(and a couple of others) I know very little about animation which I’d like to try and finally attempt to make a film.I have several animated software cds but they seem to be complicated in every sense of the word.Do you offer simple solutions say like on a demo or for downloads? I think you do excellent work and I’m sure you didn’t learn overnight.I can stay on my photos for hours but I am very limited on what I know. The codes are kind of confusing to me.If you feel its not worth the time or effort you are not obligated to answer me.But I do want you to know that I appreciate the time, talent and effort wrapped up in all your work.Thank you and I wish you continued progression.
