 AWAY3D FLASH realtime dynamic specular light

This is the first time I am REALLY seeing the specular light in realtime, in Flash. Using Away3D’s Light3D, and  40wx50h sphere you can see what it looks like. All I have to say is:

“WOW . That is a REAL specular light.” :)

 THIS IS THE TURTLE YOU ARE USED TO SEEING:
 AWAY3D DEMO TURTLE remember me? :)

Just playing around - with limited capabilities and time + LIMITLESS imagination, I came across some amazing ways to create materials in AWAY3d (and could also be done to an extent in papervision3d as well)!

I had become quite tired of that ”sea“ing that turtle I made - so I decided to see it - in a new light
Pirates of the Caribbean comes to mind :) I am Johnny Depp, there are sea turtles… The rest is up to you :)

It is always fun “beta-testing” new 3D engines for me, and here are some possibilities. I have had the luxury of hacking my way through the amazing lessons Alexander has created, and finally make my way to recreating my own static 3D Turtle (that many might have become sea-sick of already too).

Of course I am still having fun, but it is something anyone can do, as for any questions, (and as one of my best friends told me, and perhaps the greatest tool anyone can use) :

USE YOUR IMAGINATION :)

post Autostereogram images generated with Away3D

July 26th, 2007

Aviary suite uses Away3D to generate autostereogram images - that’s really amazing! (if you can’t see a hummingbird and a donut on this image - you may have better luck here).

A custom depth renderer is used to produce a black & white image that is later applied to an irregular texture background - one more step for Away3D into a real 3D ;)

Away3D outlines

Adding outlines made easy in Away3D… as easy as setting:

{outline:”yellow|2″}

for the hairthin outlines, or:

{outline:”green|6″, material:”transparent”}

for the bold one (in the screenshot).

post AWAY3D Demo > Easy to play with…

I scraped some code together from the LESSONS that can be found under “DOWNLOADS” (in handy dandy FLA format), along with a nifty turtle and texture made by yours truly :).

In Firefox the new AWAY3D code can run this simple scene (with some lights) at almost 400 fps on my Windows XP P4. IE can never seem to break 64 fps.

However I made this one locked at 60 fps. It’s just a simple demo, a mix of moving lights, the mesh lesson, and the container lesson.

A simple example of how easy it is to play with away3d… there is nothing that hard about it!

post Behold Ye: Golden Bird

gold birdy

Looking very shiny now, isn’t it? I have improved the speed of the process so that it can handle a decent polygon count. Some people sure gave me a shove in the right direction! :) But please, do not retreat now. :P

I had planned much more for the bitmapdata in the engine, so that a whole series of effects could be mixed and added to each other (much like a ‘poor mans’ shader engine). Since I have to rewrite a big piece, I will have to rethink the structure (and a way to do it).

For now, I’ve created some movement quickly for the imagemap and synced it to the camera. Behold ye, shiny golden hummingbird!

The original colored texture used in this demo was designed by Meowza.

Difficult to believe the above image is being rendered with Flash, eh?!

Yes, I think I got it… while playing with the new code, I finally managed to get what I was looking for. The metal has now the real look and feel I wanted to get!

Next step… speed improvement and influence from lighting!

While writing some classes for Away3D, I sometimes (read very often) get unexpected results. During my last playtime, I came across this one while trying to get a bumpy look on a material.
